Mentoring & Supervision

Pursuing a doctorate means learning how to do original research. Thus, good scientific supervision is an important success factor in this process.

In addition, a doctorate is a career step, which offers a broad field of different career options from academia to industry. Mentoring can help in preparing further career steps and making the right decisions.

Thesis Advisory Committee

To ensure high quality scientific supervision and advice, each doctoral researcher is guided by a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) comprised of three advisors:

  • The professor supervising the doctoral researcher
  • A second professor from a matching discipline
  • A senior researcher (e.g. postdoc, group leader) involved in the day-to-day technical supervision.

The two professors should be chosen from two different of our partner universities to foster collaboration between the institutions.

Mentoring

In collaboration with the Cluster of Excellence POLiS (Post Lithium Storage), the GS-EES offers a mentoring program for their doctoral and post-doctoral researchers.

Mentors share their professional and tacit knowledge and experience with the mentees and thus support them in their personal or academic/professional development. In addition, the mentor can give the mentees access to his/her networks and explain the rules in the respective branch.

Once a year, we organize a matchmaking between mentors from academia and industry and mentees who apply for the program.

We are constantly looking for new mentors, if you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Dr. Johannes Schnaidt at johannes.schnaidt@uni-ulm.de or fill in our contact form

In the current run, 12 mentor-mentee tandems have been matched.
